I feel slightly uncomfortable that the press has these huge news holes to fill and fills them with whatever the top story of the time is. So, after the serious earthquakes in Haiti and Tibet (and less damaging quakes in Taiwan, Chile ...) we seem to have almost an equal news fascination with the Icelandic volcanoes, which are causing ... inconvenience to travelers.
It's a lot of inconvenience, for sure. My niece and her husband are stuck in India. Many thousands are stranded around the world. But being stranded and being in Haiti are two different levels of problem and it's slightly disturbing to see the same sort of font sizes applied to both.
The title of this post isn't original; it's John Dean's at http://groups.google.com/group/alt.fan.cecil-adams/browse_frm/thread/963cdfd028a870fc?hl=en
So.. you would feel better if a smaller font size were used? Or should each article be prefaced with "while this is no catastrophe compared to Haiti.."
ReplyDeleteSorry, there's a lot that disturbs me about news coverage but I'm not able to get worked up about this.
