There’s an interesting article on ALDI, the secretive discount grocery chains with $54 billion euros in annual sales. ALDI companies have 1391 stores in the US under ALDI and Trader Joe’s banners, and about 7700 stores in Europe.

The occasion of the article is the death of Theo Albrecht, one of the two brothers who control the companies. ALDI is famously secretive, a tendency perhaps encouraged by Theo’s experience being kidnapped and held for 17 days in 1971.
