We're used to thinking of red states and blue states, but this ignores the differences within a state. This map shows counties voting for Bush or Kerry in the 2004 election. It was created by Michael Gastner, Cosma Shalizi, and Mark Nudeman of the University of Michigan.
The large difference between western Mississippi (blue) and eastern Mississippi (red) was new to me, along with the band of blue counties across central Alabama.
This is disheartening to me. It looks even worse for the blue than the normal red state-blue state map does. I realize that the blue is usually centered around areas with great population density so the actual population numbers are more equal than this looks, but geez! We're swimming in a see of red. In my county, I rarely have a blue candidate to vote for in the lesser offices. I think I need to move!
