July 18: Pocatello ID to Twin Falls ID

120 miles

We split this one. I started at 5:50 a.m. and did about 67 miles; Beth and Abby started at the Snake River bridge over SR 25 and did 53. At their starting point, Deb spotted a nest, with probably a parent nearby. We haven't identified the bird yet.

It was hot and windy at the end of the shift, which is why we started out so early. There were some miles on the interstate, where I saw this interesting set of vending machines at a rest stop.

The landscape was pretty empty, as the road picture shows. That's old US 30 with nothing in sight except a bird next to the side of the road, way down there. This empty stretch went for about 20 miles. There were cattle guards, but no cattle and no traffic at all -- just more headwinds as the day wore on.

We were done with our shifts about 2 p.m., when it was still only 88 degrees and the heat wasn't so bad yet.

It's likely the bird is an osprey. In our family, we call them "tree penguins" because of their coloring...when they sit upright, they look a bit like penguins.
